Job Summary:

The Waste Management Technician is responsible for managing and processing waste materials, ensuring that they are handled, sorted, and disposed of in compliance with safety and environmental regulations. This role involves operating specialized equipment, performing routine maintenance, and assisting in the development of waste reduction strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Waste Handling and Processing:

    • Operate and maintain waste processing equipment, including shredders, compactors, and conveyors.
    • Sort waste materials into appropriate categories (e.g., recyclable, compostable, hazardous) according to established guidelines.
    • Monitor and manage the flow of waste materials to ensure efficient processing and minimal environmental impact.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

    • Perform routine inspections and maintenance on waste management equipment to ensure proper functioning.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment issues; report major problems to the maintenance team.
  • Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
    • Ensure that waste handling practices comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate records of waste quantities, types, and processing activities.
    • Prepare reports on waste management operations and performance metrics as required.
  • Customer and Public Interaction:

    • Provide information and guidance to the public or clients regarding waste management practices and recycling programs.
    • Address and resolve any issues or concerns related to waste collection and processing.
  • Waste Reduction and Efficiency:

    • Assist in the development and implementation of waste reduction and recycling programs.
    • Identify opportunities for process improvements and recommend changes to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in environmental science or a related field is a plus.
    • Previous experience in waste management or a similar field is preferred.
  • Skills:

    • Strong understanding of waste management principles and environmental regulations.
    • Ability to operate and maintain waste processing equipment safely and efficiently.
    • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Effective communication skills for interacting with the public and team members.
  • Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift and move heavy objects, stand for long periods, and work in various environmental conditions.
